Shaped layer by layer

Every Ciseal object begins as a stack of thin wood veneers. Layered by hand and pressed into a carefully made mold, those flat sheets become a single curved form—strong, light, and shaped for everyday use.

That transformation is the heart of bent plywood, and the foundation of everything I make in my Leonard, Michigan studio.

What is bent plywood?

Traditional woodworking often begins by cutting parts from solid lumber and joining them together. Bent plywood builds the form itself from layers.

Each sheet of veneer is flexible on its own. Once the veneers are stacked, glued, and held under pressure around a mold, the layers become one strong structure. This makes it possible for a curve to carry both function and character: a bend can become a leg, shelf, handle, cradle, or support without adding unnecessary parts.

The result is furniture and home objects that feel visually light but are made for real, lasting use.

From an idea to a form

Every new design begins with a question.

How can one continuous curve perform several jobs? How little material can an object use without sacrificing strength? Can something familiar—a stool, lamp, tray, or stand—be made more useful, more expressive, or simply more satisfying to live with?

Sketches lead to scale models. Scale models lead to full-size prototypes. I study proportion, balance, strength, comfort, and the way a line changes as you move around it. Some ideas reveal themselves quickly. Others go through many revisions before the form feels inevitable.

The finished objects are only the visible part of that process. Behind each one are the versions that bent incorrectly, felt unbalanced, looked awkward, or taught me what the design needed to become.

The making process

1. Preparing the veneer

I select the wood veneer and cut each layer slightly larger than the finished object. The number and arrangement of layers depend on the size, structure, and demands of the design.

2. Building the layers

Adhesive is applied carefully across each sheet before the veneers are assembled into a single stack. Even coverage matters: every layer must work together once the form is under pressure.

3. Shaping the curve

The layered veneer is placed into a mold made specifically for that design. Pressure draws the material around the mold and holds the curve in place while the adhesive cures.

This is the moment when a collection of flexible sheets becomes one structural form.

4. Trimming and refining

Once the piece is released from the mold, the rough edges are trimmed to their final dimensions. Openings, transitions, and profiles are cut and shaped until the form matches the original design.

5. Sanding by hand

Each surface and edge is sanded through multiple stages. This refines the curves, softens the places where the object meets the hand, and brings the layered construction into focus.

6. Finishing and inspecting

A hand-applied natural oil-and-wax finish enriches the wood grain while protecting the surface from everyday use. Cork, rubber feet, or metal hardware are added where the design calls for them.

Before a piece leaves the studio, I inspect the form, finish, edges, and details myself.

The layers stay visible

The exposed edge of a Ciseal object is not something to conceal. It is a cross-section of how the piece was made.

Each narrow line records an individual sheet of veneer. Together, they reveal how strength was built gradually and how a flat material learned to curve.

Leaving those layers visible keeps the construction honest. The process becomes part of the object’s character rather than something hidden beneath it.

Materials chosen with intention

I use sustainably sourced wood veneer for its flexibility, strength, and natural variation. Different face veneers give each design its color and grain, while the laminated structure allows slender forms to remain strong.

Because wood is a natural material, no two pieces will look exactly alike. I work for consistency without erasing the variations that make the material worth using in the first place.

The finish is chosen with the same restraint. It protects the wood and brings out its depth without covering the surface in a heavy layer of plastic.

Made by one pair of hands

Ciseal is a one-person design studio. I design, prototype, mold, trim, sand, finish, inspect, and pack every piece here in Leonard, Michigan.

Working at this scale keeps the distance between an idea and its finished form remarkably short. What I learn while making one piece can inform the next prototype, the next mold, or the next object entirely.

It also means that Ciseal objects are made to order or in small runs—not sent through an anonymous production line. Time is part of the process because attention is part of the result.

Objects worth keeping

Ciseal is an Irish Gaelic word for layer. The name first described the way I work with wood, but it has come to describe how I think about a home.

A thoughtfully designed home is not completed all at once. It takes shape slowly, through the objects, experiences, and choices that accumulate meaning over time.
