The Michigan Left Lamp is retiring. Just four remain—two in white oak and two in mahogany—and once they’re gone, this design will not be made again.
Inspired by Michigan’s unconventional approach to left turns, the lamp translates the familiar right-turn-followed-by-a-U-turn into a continuous sculptural curve. Its arcing bent plywood base creates a distinctive silhouette while supporting a white linen shade that casts a warm layer of ambient light.
The Michigan Left is generously scaled without feeling heavy. Its open form gives it visual presence beside a sofa, on a nightstand, or at the end of a console, while the pull-chain switch keeps the light easy to reach.
Each base was formed by hand in my Leonard, Michigan studio from 13 layers of sustainably harvested wood veneer. I glue and mold the layers into shape, then trim, sand, and finish each lamp individually. The exposed edges reveal the construction of the curve—a quiet record of how the object was made.
A hand-applied matte oil finish brings out the natural character of the wood while providing a durable, water- and stain-resistant surface. Cork feet protect the table beneath the lamp and keep its broad base resting securely.
The final Michigan Left Lamps are available in white oak and mahogany. Each will be assembled and finished to order.
A linen fabric-wrapped cord is standard. To request another color, select Other and include your preference with your order.
